The Salt Spring Island Land Bank Society

Safe and affordable housing is fundamental for Salt Spring residents striving to build a strong future for their families and their community. We believe that every individual deserves a home, and that the growing trend towards gentrification on Salt Spring which results in higher house and rental prices should not force people off the island to look for houses in unfamiliar communities. We believe that people should be rewarded for the time and energy that they put into a community, and are saddened when those same people are forced to leave the island because they can no longer justify spending half of their income on housing. We are working towards the day when the safety and beauty of Salt Spring will once again be accessible to young families, when seniors will walk the pathways unmolested by thoughts of their dwindling retirement funds, when our children don’t automatically abandon the island after they graduate high school, and when single people of any age find Salt Spring a welcoming place to live free, full, and self-actualizing lives. Today, homelessness and housing-need affects many different individuals on the island, from many different walks of life. Salt Spring Island Land Bank Society is dedicated to enabling a culture of autonomous, healthy individuals and fostering a strong future for the island community. Among other things, we focus on growing the number of affordable housing units available on the island, capitalizing on overlooked opportunity in the Official Community Plan (Community Cottages – coming soon), and discovering creative ways to work with the Islands Trust to achieve both their and our goals.
